30 October, 2009 Centor Architectural Shines as 'Global Star'
Leading Australian designer and manufacturer of window and door screening systems, Centor Architectural, has received the Global Star award at the 2009 Queensland 400 Business Awards, recognising it as one of the most internationally successful privately owned companies in Queensland. The latest award continues a successful 18 months for Centor which has seen it also win the 2008 AMP National Innovation Award and the 2008 Telstra Queensland Business of the Year. Centor also recently won a Crystal Achievement Award for 'Most Innovative Door Component' in the United States announced by major US magazine Window & Door. The latest recognition follows a recent announcement by Centor to increase its international footprint with the export of its new Centor S1E Eco-Screen, fully retractable flyscreen and solar control blind. Researched, designed and manufactured in Australia, the S1E Eco-screen includes a retractable cloth which acts as a blind to provide privacy, temperature control and shade, before disappearing into the door frame when not in use. Centor Managing Director, Nigel Spork, said the Global Star award was a wonderful boost of confidence for the company which is witnessing rapid growth potential. "What we design here in Australia for Australian homes and lifestyles is providing design opportunities for homes and office spaces all over the world," Mr Spork said. "Our innovation and technology is quickly becoming recognised as world's best practice and we are keen to capitalise on the partnerships and global opportunities this recognition can bring." With its headoffice in Brisbane, Centor already has offices in the United States and the United Kingdom. "We are committed to international success with our European sales at record levels in spite of economic conditions, and our efforts in North America starting to really pay off," Mr Spork said.
6 August, 2009 Australian Eco-Screen Invention to Help Reduce Carbon Emissions
Minister for Trade, Simon Crean, today congratulated Brisbane-based manufacturer Centor on the launch this week of its Australian invention - a fully retractable, flyscreen and solar control blind. "This is an excellent example of Australian research and design capability - a locally manufactured invention that will reduce carbon emissions and allow people worldwide to enjoy an Australian outdoor lifestyle," Mr Crean said. Centor Managing Director, Mr Nigel Spork, said building designers will be able to use this world-first invention on large windows and doors to make the most of natural light, control heat gain during summer, reduce heat loss in winter, thereby reducing reliance on heating and cooling systems. "We are committed to international success and expect our European sales for August 2009 to be a company record, and we have high hope for our efforts in North America," Mr Spork said. The 60-year-old family business operates in four continents and employs around 130 staff. Mr Crean commented that because Australia's domestic market is small, it is vital that local businesses are able to access a range of production capabilities - both onshore and offshore - to achieve the scale of production necessary for global success. "This is certainly true of many manufacturing businesses, including Centor, who are increasingly utilising global production capabilities to help them compete internationally," said Mr Crean. "This willingness to push into overseas markets and establish a presence overseas is an important element of maintaining Australia's engagement with the global economy and is a strategy that the Government supports." The Minister for Trade is in Brisbane to attend a meeting of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Ministerial Council on International Trade on 6-7 August, hosted by the Queensland Government. Presented annually by the official publication of the powerful National Glass Association, the awards honour the best in new product technology, manufacturing and marketing in the fenestration industry. The award for Most Innovative Door Component, with its ground-breaking insect screening system was Centor's second such award in two years! "It's another great endorsement for what we do," said Centor Managing Director Nigel Spork. "Our weathersealed bifold door hardware was a big hit in 2006, and for the Centor Screen to get the same reaction really shows we're on the right path" Centor S1 is the largest capacity, most robust retractable screening system in production and responds to the increasing size of architectural openings allowed for by rapidly evolving door system technology. Developed from the bifold-integrated ES2 screening system, S1 can be matched with every door and window type, including sliding and French doors, for a flexible, effective screening solution. Ready for action as soon as temperatures allow for open windows and doors, S1 remains rolled back out of view the rest of the year. "The demand was clearly there for a stand-alone system," said Spork. "We just had to find a way to deliver a system that looked as good and performed as well as ES2, without the limitations that come with an integrated system." The award caps a period of sustained growth for Centor, which has seen the company nominated as Finalist for three categories in the Telstra Business Awards. "It's certainly encouraging for us to be recognised ," reflected Nigel Spork. "These awards inspire us to keep pushing the boundaries by creating systems that give people more control over their environment."
